Long before Mira Mushi was a Dream Siren, she was just a normal ox-kin. She enjoyed her peaceful lifestyle during the day, but when she fell asleep things changed. Instead of normal dreams, she was able to hear the whispers of all kinds of horrors in the dream realm.One fateful night, she stayed up late to avoid the terrors that plagued her dreams. When she looked up, there were tons of shooting stars flying through the air. She watched in awe, as one seemed to get bigger and brighter with every second. It was coming straight at her! She got up to move out of the way, but instead, the shooting star transformed into a butterfly and landed on her nose.Such a soft and fleeting action resulted in changes she couldn’t expect at all, as she transformed into a Dream Siren!Now that she was a Dream Siren, she could travel to the Dreamworld! She learned that it’s called Somnium.Somnium is a place of beauty, but also dangers. Turns out, it’s corrupted by the Shadowborn that threatens the dreamworld—this corruption was part of the reason she always heard those scary whispers in her dreams.
The Dreamworld was far more diverse than she could’ve ever possibly imagined (though she truthfully had never dreamed of an entire ‘Dreamworld’ before she had become a Dream Siren).
The Waking Woods: This is where she appeared when she first arrived, and it’s the mystical forest that goes between the waking world and Somnium.
Dreamhaven: The crystalline city that is the central hub of all Somnium was the first place she visited. It features beautiful spires and healing gardens! Within Dreamhaven are many other kinds of landmarks, two of which are:
The Starlight Spire: Mira’s sanctuary that’s compromised of the very same crystalline structures, and allows her to connect to the very pulse of the dream realm.
The Dreamweaver’s Forge: The massive forge for Somnium that allows its residents to create mystical tools that are used to maintain the wondrous lands of Somnium.
The Shadowlands: The birthplace of the Shadowborn, a dark void region created from fears and nightmares.
Within the Shadowlands lies The Nightmare’s Lair, a dark, heavily defended stronghold where the Shadowborn reside.
The Dreamstream: A beautiful, iridescent river whose gentle current connects all of the regions of Somnium, and is the source of her ability to dream walk. Because it connects all of Somnium, it picks up some of the shadowy substance of the Shadowlands along with it, bringing that fearsome corruption all over the region.
Dreamworld is also a place of whimsy and illusion, resulting in a few regions that have shifting dreamscapes—always moving and changing. Impossible to properly map out, it’s very easy for some to get lost.
The Gardens of Whimsy: A beautiful, lively, and vibrant garden where many of Somnium’s mythical creatures thrive, along with beautiful plant life. This is where she found Luminaris!
The Maze of Reflections: A convoluted labyrinth that shifts based on the dreamer’s memories and emotions.
The Clockwork Cathedral: Whereas many of the other regions of Somnium are fantastical and mystical, this region is very mechanical, born of the rational mind and the logic that can persist even within dreams.
The Abyss of Fears: One of the most terrifying areas of the Shadowlands. It shifts based on concerns and fears, plaguing everyone within, or even near.
After seeing everything the Dreamworld had to offer, and learning the importance of it, she took a vow to protect it. Not only to encourage and preserve beautiful dreams but to
subdue and stop the corruption of nightmares and Shadowborn.
Her dedication helped her hone her magic and talents quickly, learning to manipulate dreams and control illusions. She can walk between dreams of different people, and use energy magic to neutralize the Shadowborn.She isn’t alone or unarmed: she has quite a few weapons and friends to help her on her
journey:
Dreamweaver: A beautiful, mobile sanctuary shaped like a fluffy cloud.
Luminaris (Lumi): Her bunny companion. Usually small (normal bunny size), and helps her detect nightmares. Around nightmares, Lum’s form shifts into something much longer, stronger, and fearsome. He has glowing red eyes in this form!
Lumi (like all things born from Somnium) is actually partly made of the shadowy substance, which allows for the more fearful battle form. Each time Lumi goes to the Shadowlands, the shadow within him grows, although Mira doesn’t learn that until much later.
Dreamweaver’s Orb: An intricately decorated orb that can open and suck in nightmares. The orb then cleanses these and turns them into power that Mira can use.
Drape of Dreams: The item she wears as a shawl along her back and arms enables her magic and allows her to control illusions, her dream walking, etc.
Slumberlink: Rose gold and pink chains symbolizing her bond to the Dreamworld, with dual-purpose chains on their thigh for Slumber's Embrace (offering peaceful rest) and Nightmare's Snare (capturing and banishing evil forces).
On the typical day (or rather, night), Mira Mushi patrols Somnium with her companion Lumi. She was gifted these powers for a reason, and she’ll use them for good—she seeks out darkness and corruption and removes
Corrupted dreams and nightmares can take the form of many things—amorphous blobs of things that represent scary concepts, or even monsters! All of them are always made of the same shadowy substance that all of the Shadowborn are. Their forms change based on a dreamer’s subconscious fears or anxieties. For example, the Shadowborn could form a swarm resembling wasps for someone that is scared of bugs.
Typically, Mira will use her Drape of Dreams to create illusions to distract the threats enough to be able to capture them with her Nightmare’s Snare, banishing them from the lands of Somnium!
Her attempts (although well-meaning) are not as effective as she thinks—in fact, the Dreamworld can never be truly free of nightmares, as balance is needed even here. As such, all she can do is make sure that the nightmares and the Shadowborn do not become strong enough to completely corrupt the beauty of Somnium and dreams.
Although she’s dedicated to protecting the integrity and beauty of Somnium, she still takes some time to enjoy the area. She is dedicated to get to know the other dreamers,
learning about them, and making sure they have a wonderful and safe visit in the Dreamworld. Mira devotes herself to protecting them while they are in her care, and is known as a very positive and kind presence in their dreams
